The hypothalamus is known as the “brain of the brain” it coordinates numerous endocrine (electro-chemical) functions in the body:

  • pituitary regulation

  • the Reproductive System

  • the Autonomic Nervous System

  • Sympathetic/Parasympathetic balance

  • Blood pressure and Heart rate

  • Neurotransmitter regulation

  • Mood and Behavior

  • Sleep Cycles

As the “brain of the brain,” which is itself an electrochemical organ, the requirement by the body for the hypothalamus to function at its peak at all times makes its nominal operation critical. And, like any electrical system, we may find “short circuits” when loads become too much, or too little nourishment enables the “gears of the machine” to smoothly handle their circuit loads. Even more, when the hypothalamus is not performing to its potential or is confused, the two hemispheres of the brain may not communicate well with each other. Dr. Chance often compares the hypothalamus to a “breaker box,” as in one’s home or car. We may have electricity, appliances, and have paid our bills, but if the busses or fuses have blown, they need to be reset so that we may enjoy our home. In like manner do we assist the hypothalamus.

How does a hypothalamus get overloaded? As an electric-chemical gland, it is severely challenged by food additives and poor diet, fluorescent lights (common in schools and public and government areas), stress, trauma, genetics, epigenetics, lack of electrolyte intake, poor fat consumption, poor coordination habits in childhood, and more.

The pituitary is often called the Master Gland, but in reality, the hypothalamus is. Dr. Chance has found that many conditions are relieved by resetting the hypothalamus, which is performed with a combination of muscle testing, reflex points, and tapping along specific vertebrae, to bring the hypothalamus back into a nominal relationship with “offending agents,” so that they offend no more. Treatments do not require a long period of time—typically no more than 30 minutes. Whole-food nutritional support (either vegetarian or omnivoric) is often found to be helpful and may be suggested as an aid to further the benefits of the work. I do this as a Clinical Herbalist.

I offer HRT in 30 minute session blocks. I also offer it as a part of 90 minute sessions, in which we perform the HRT prior to treating the client with approximately 60 minutes of integrating bodywork—usually CranioSacral. HRT is a wonderful adjunct to Elemental CranioSacral Work™, as we can address many aspects of neurological health:

  • energetics

  • functionality

  • motion and range of motion

How I came to this Method

I graduated from the Florida School of Massage in 2003, and I immediately was hired on at Chance Chiropractic, where I worked as a clinic tech and massage therapist. I often finished some of the neural reflex points for the doctors there, as the points were easy to stimulate and did not require the doctors to spend their time doing that; they could treat more folks. Well, I was extremely enamored of the way they worked, because as chiropractors, they weren’t solely interested in the structure (eg. spine), but were also helping their patients with nutrition, emotional, and neurological functioning. And they were masters of AK—applied kinesiology, or muscle testing! They still are. Even now, the way they work influences me, my thinking, my approach to healing.

These past couple of years hit me hard, physically. As of this writing (April 2024), I have had Covid twice—neither time was a bad deal, but the aftereffects or “long-covid”—yikes! Recently, I was having all sorts of problems: spontaneously collapsing knees, low blood oxygen, foggy brain, poor memory, pain all over, an inability to take a deep breath, losing my voice for no apparent reason, inability to exercise, and more. Many tests were done, and much money was spent. I suddenly had the idea to venture back down to Chance Chiropractic Center in Gainesville, FL, to see what the good doctors there could do, as I seemed to be dead-ended wherever I turned. Well, after being treated with HRT, I now have none of the symptoms I had before. It’s as though I had never been ill! But even more than this, Dr. Michael Chance (Dr. Mike!) informed me that this technique he developed over time, and uses is new—the Chance Hypothalamic Reset Technique™. He said that he was teaching it, and that, if I wanted, I should look into learning it. I was dumbfounded! The Chance Doctors are my heroes, even if they are Florida Gator fans, and to have the invitation to step into their world and help people even barely approximating what they do was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.
